Stringent Regulations for Leakage Prevention and Maintenance of Pipeline Networks Boost Pipe Relining Market Growth

According to our latest market study on "Pipe Relining Market Size and Forecast (2021–2031), Global and Regional Share, Trend, and Growth Opportunity Analysis – by Solution, Curing Method, End User," the market was valued at US$ 9,267.61 million in 2024 and is anticipated to reach US$ 13,093.73 million by 2031; it is estimated to register a CAGR of 5.3% during 2025–2031. The report includes growth prospects in light of current pipe relining market trends and driving factors influencing market growth.

Conventional sewer pipeline repair methods involve excavation and digging, which are costly, time-consuming, and disruptive. These processes take several days and even weeks, depending on the complexity of the issue. With pipe relining, the cost of digging and excavation of land is typically lowered because pipe relining does not require any digging and excavation. The pipe relining process involves the insertion of a durable lining inside the damaged pipe; the process can be completed with minimal disruption and at minimum cost. In recent years, property managers, government municipalities, and homeowners have made use of pipe relining methods instead of pipe replacements. Apart from being a slow process, the traditional renovation of pipes can be costly, particularly when the damaged pipes are located underneath landscaped lawns, tiled flooring, or behind finished walls. The traditional replacement method involves removing everything covering the pipe. After this process, contractors must restore the damaged landscape and building areas. Thus, pipe relining technology is considered the most effective and emerging solution for the restoration of damaged pipe systems both outside and inside buildings. This process restores pipes without damage and protects them from various failures, including corrosion, debris buildup, root intrusion, and leaks. Additionally, the pipe liners protect the transported substances from mixing with metals within the pipes, thus preventing lead leaching and decomposition. Pipe relining is not only an appropriate solution for drain lines and portable water lines restoration, but can also be used for vertical applications, mechanical systems, and roof drains.

Pipe relining can improve the flow within the pipes. For instance, in 2024, Larsen & Toubro secured a contract worth US$ 300 million from Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The project involves engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) of 129 kilometers of subsea pipelines and related modification works for ONGC's west coast offshore fields. In 2024, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) began laying pipelines as part of its sewage management system across nine wards, with an estimated cost of US$ 24.99 million. In 2024, Tiruchi Corporation planned to replace the 22-year-old underground drainage (UGD) pipeline network running at 8 feet below Gandhi Road. In 2024, the state government initiated an ambitious project to renovate Hyderabad's sewerage system. The plan intends to renovate the aging infrastructure and expand the sewer network to the Outer Ring Road (ORR), ensuring complete coverage as the city expands. Under the government's Sewerage Master Plan (CSMP), the project is anticipated to register the construction of a 4,378-kilometer sewer network. In November 2021, Capital Sewer Services (CSS) achieved a contract worth US$ 23.25 million in Toronto, Canada, to rehabilitate ~2,280 m of trunk sewers, highlighting the benefits of several trenchless methods such as cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) slip lining, and spray-applied shotcrete lining. Thus, the growing number of pipeline extension and renovation works, along with the rising adoption of pipe relining owing to its associated advantages, such as cost efficiency, is propelling the market growth.

The scope of the pipe relining market report focuses on North America (the US, Canada, and Mexico), Europe (the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, and the Rest of Europe), Asia Pacific (South Korea, China, India, Japan, Australia, and the Rest of Asia Pacific), Middle East and Africa (South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the Rest of Middle East), and South and Central America (Brazil, Argentina, and the Rest of South and Central America).

North America held the largest pipe relining market share in 2024. North America is one of the noteworthy regions for the pipe relining market, driven by aging pipeline infrastructure and growing industrialization. Many cities in the US and Canada are grappling with decades-old sewer and water pipelines that demand urgent replacement or repair. The growing government focus on sustainability and minimal disruption to urban areas has made pipe relining a desired solution, propelling the growth of the pipe relining market in North America. The US has managed to maintain its position as one of the significant producers of oil and natural gas in 2024, requiring a robust and expanding pipeline network to transport these resources across the country. Pipelines remain the most cost-effective and efficient means of transporting liquid and gaseous fuels over long distances. A significant portion of the US pipeline network is over 50 years old, increasing the risk of leaks and accidents. Upgrading this infrastructure remains an expensive but urgent priority. As per the EIA information, a few of the completed projects are mentioned below.

  • South Bend Pipeline, completed in 2023, is a 150,000-barrel-per-day (b/d) pipeline developed by Bridger Pipeline, LLC. It transports crude oil over ~137 miles from Johnson's Corner (North Dakota) to Baker (Montana).
  • Port Neches Link is a 630,000-b/d pipeline developed by Port Neches Link, LLC, a joint venture of TC Energy and Motiva Enterprises, that begins at the Sunoco Logistics terminal in Nederland and ends at Motiva's terminal in Port Neches (both in Texas). The pipeline is approximately five miles in length and was completed in 2023.
  • Borger Express Pipeline is a 90,000 b/d pipeline developed by Navigator Energy Service. Since its completion in 2023, the pipeline transports crude oil over a distance of nearly 195 miles from Major County (Oklahoma) to Hutchinson County (Texas).

Further, the San Diego Pure Water Program completed a major phase in 2024. This initiative is anticipated to recycle over 120 million liters of wastewater daily into drinkable water by 2035. In 2024, the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department commenced the construction of a modern wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 500 million liters per day. Thus, developments in the wastewater and water management facilities and the expansion of the oil and gas pipeline network boost the demand for pipe relining services in the US.

In Europe, Germany held the largest pipe relining market share in 2024. The German government is increasingly focusing on strengthening water treatment facilities in the country. For instance, in December 2023, an agreement was initiated between the European Union, Germany, and the Republic of Kosovo to raise funds for wastewater treatment and solid waste management projects. The agreement is anticipated to raise more than US$ 110.36 million in funding from 2023 to 2027. Germany is also renowned for its expertise in the water treatment industry, which exhibits an increased domestic demand for water treatment facilities. The country has ~8,891 wastewater treatment facilities in its public sector. With increased investments in wastewater treatment plants, the need for pipe relining in the country is likely to rise in the coming years. In 2024, H+E Group secured a contract to build an ultrapure water (UPW) plant in Germany. In 2023, Germany and the Netherlands initiated a joint venture to develop modern water facilities and utilities to address the needs of smart cities. Thus, the burgeoning focus on developing smart facilities to cater to the growing demand of the urban population propels the requirement for pipe relining solutions in Germany.

Germany experiences sluggish growth in oil and gas production, which is due to the scarcity of oil and gas resources across the country's mining areas. The country relies majorly on imports from other countries, such as the US, Italy, the UK, and Norway. It imports nearly ~70% of its energy requirements as its domestic production caters to only ~2% of its oil consumption and ~6% of its gas consumption. In 2022, Germany's chancellor announced that the country would prohibit new drilling in its North Sea apart from its existing infrastructure. Hence, the pipe relining market in Germany is expected to grow at a moderate pace in the coming years, and the growth is expected from existing offshore platforms only.
