Numerous industries highly adopt ASRS for a variety of applications that require increased storage capacity, accurate order picking and fulfillment, optimizing stock levels, and streamlining processes by improving overall throughput. ASRS is installed in automotive, aerospace, e-commerce, manufacturing, and logistics industries to maintain an efficient working environment. It also plays an important role in the e-commerce, logistics, retail, and warehouse industries by speeding up the order fulfillment process and minimizing human involvement in physically demanding tasks. The rising demand for ASRS in industries encourages manufacturers to develop innovative products that are capable of meeting the dynamic requirements of customers. A few ASRS developments made by manufacturers to improve their offering by attracting customers worldwide are mentioned below:

  • In May 2024, ABB Ltd introduced a fully automated storage and retrieval system, the ABB OmniVance FlexBuffer robot system, to transform the warehouse operation at its instrumentation factory in Ossuccio, Italy. The system supports the factory in managing all warehouse loading and offloading activities and helps the factory improve 90% of its overall logistics efficiency. It eliminates manual handling and lower the time required for final package assembly by 30%.
  • In August 2023, Falcon Autotech launched its cutting-edge product, NEO, a new take on ASRS at CeMAT 2023 in Sydney. NEO leverages state-of-the-art robotics, artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and 3D movement features to navigate in the X, Y, and Z dimensions effortlessly. Its unique capacity to move on the ground and climb racks without the need for lifts or conveyor systems, reaching heights of up to 40 ft, allows organizations to utilize vertical space and access any stock-keeping unit (SKU) within storage with a single robot.
  • In February 2023, Murata Machinery USA, Inc. launched the new Ledger A3 mini-load is a high-density, four-tote carriage automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) to expand Muratec’s range of automated material handling solutions for small product storage and retrieval. The Ledger A3 AS/RS is the industry's first mini-load featuring high-speed, simultaneous carriage loading and unloading of four totes for storing, picking, and sorting tiny, lightweight items. This innovative crane is designed to enable maximum high-density storage and retrieval for high-throughput distribution applications, with twice the capacity of a standard mini-load AS/RS.

Thus, the surge in manufacturing volume fuels the growth of the automated storage and retrieval system market.

Bastian Solutions, Inc.; Daifuku Co., Ltd.; KION GROUP AG; Kardex Group; Knapp AG; Mecalux, S.A.; SSI Schaefer Group; Swisslog Holding AG; System Logistics Spa; and Vanderlande Industries are among the key players profiled in the automated storage and retrieval systems market report. Several other major players were also studied and analyzed in the market study to get a holistic view of the market and its ecosystem.

The report includes the automated storage and retrieval systems market forecast by type, end-use industry, and geography. Based on type, the market is divided into unit load ASRS, mini load ASRS, vertical lift module, vertical carousels, horizontal carousels, AutoStore, and others. In terms of revenue, the vertical lift module segment held the largest automated storage and retrieval systems market share and is expected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period.

The scope of the automated storage and retrieval systems market report focuses on North America (the US, Canada, and Mexico), Europe (Spain, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the Rest of Europe), Asia Pacific (South Korea, China, India, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, and the Rest of Asia Pacific), the Middle East & Africa (South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Rest of Middle East & Africa), and South & Central America (Brazil, Argentina, and the Rest of South & Central America). North America dominated the market in 2024, followed by Europe and APAC.

In terms of revenue, China held the largest automated storage and retrieval systems market share in APAC. China has large manufacturing and assembly units operated by major electronics manufacturers from different parts of the world. The rising production capacities of these units result in a strong demand for ASRS to use storage spaces more practically and free up floor spaces for better mobility within the manufacturing units. China has the largest e-commerce market worldwide. According to HSBC Group data from March 2024, China’s cross-border B2C e-commerce is expected to reach US$ 500 billion by the end of 2025. The growth is attributed to the rising online shopping and increasing retail spending. According to the same source, 60% (1.6 billion) of the population in China prefers online shopping, and e-commerce channels account for 37% of retail spending. The growth of the e-commerce sector and consumers' preference for online shopping surge the adoption of ASRS to automate picking, storing, and retrieving items and overall inventory management. The country is experiencing rapid developments in network technology and smart automation. Under “Industry 4.0” and “Made in China 2025,” the country is adapting solutions to optimize costs through automation by reducing labor costs. Thus, the flourishing e-commerce sector and government efforts to develop technology infrastructure contribute to the growth of the automated storage and retrieval systems market in China.
